As human beings we understand that we have physical bodies. We understand this because we “see” our bodies, and science has studied the human body and reported extensively what they have found. We also realize we have emotions and thoughts. Science continues to discover how our brains and nervous systems create thoughts, and how our feelings can be studied bio-chemically and bio-electrically. It has long been recognized and measured that the human body has a magnetic field. More studies have determined we are very intricate, complex systems. Each of us is a matrix…a synergistic system involving all aspects of the physical sciences, plus the synthesis of the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of our existence. Albert Einstein stated we are expressions of a “unified energy field.” To him and other scientists, all of existence is about ENERGY.
The theory is everything in the cosmos is a vibration and operates as a vibration. Energy vibrates at different rates. Hence, we have physical objects like rocks or tables because they are very slow vibrations that allow energy to congeal and manifest in these dense forms. Light and sound are vibrations. A log from a tree is congealed energy – ignite it and a flame will burn representing the release of energy stored in the log. That energy could be used to create heat for warmth or for cooking. It could drive a mechanical object, which could then be used to generate more energy. Matter can be destroyed but energy cannot. Energy is changed or transformed.
For thousands of years, ancient traditions recognized that besides the physical operations and organs of the body, there were the “energetic” components. Meridians, nadis and chakras were some of the terms used to describe the awareness of vibrations moving in and around us. Prana, chi, and ki are terms used to describe the vital essence of life…something that seems to animate us as humans…something beyond just our physical components. Western science is now beginning to verify these flows and stations of energy, though the “physical” component is not always 100% verifiable by the scientific methods utilized.
If we accept that everything is Energy, and vibration is how energy transmits and manifests, then we can understand ourselves as more than just the physical body. We are unique and integrated energetic expressions, as determined by the Universal and cosmic blueprint. You are a body made of billions of cells and chemicals: you can think and create, you can feel and express, and you vibrate all of this to others and to the cosmos. Your vibrations create fields that make your physical body, and they make fields around your body that emanate outward 3-8 feet, which are measurable. Your emotions have vibrations…your thoughts have vibrations…your relationship to an understanding of the Divine has vibration. They are energy fields around you that contain energetic memory about you. These fields mix with the dynamic flow of energies around you from the environment and other people. All of this comes together to make the complete you…the whole you…the holistic you…the Holy You.
Understanding Chakras
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning spinning wheel. Vortex is another word we use to depict a swirling of energy. The word has its origins in India, but healers of all cultures have discerned these energy areas in people.
If you have heard of meridians from the Chinese system and understand that they are pathways or channels of energy flowing in and around the body, then the chakra would be like an energy station or center, with energy being drawn in and released through these stations.
There are 7 major chakra in the body and many minor chakras at the joints and in the hands and feet. There are also energy centers above and below your physical and energetic bodies. Focusing on the 7, they are commonly called the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown chakra. Actually, there are many names for these 7 points but these are the simple ones to remember. They run from the base of your spine to the top of your head. There are colors, sounds, archetypes, and many other symbols that are associated with each of these. All are ways of glimpsing the innate and eternal wisdom contained in these energy centers and the overall Energy System.
Each chakra has organs related to it and other body systems. Experiences and memories are energetically coded in your chakras, as they are chemically coded in your neurons. Each chakra regulates aspects of your personality. If you have blockages in a chakra, it can be revealed by how it effects the body systems and expresses in your personality. Opening and clearing chakras restores balance and life force/flow to your overall system.
Chakras can reveal how your history effects your current health and wellbeing. Open, balanced chakras will release past issues and enable you to adapt to present situations in better ways. Your system improves through: your life force (root), creativity (sacral), assertiveness (solar plexus), love and compassion (heart), expressiveness (throat), integration of logical and intuitive minds; and transcendence of self (third eye) and connectedness with the Universe (crown.)
Donna Eden writes, “the first to seventh chakra follows a natural development – from urge of life, to life’s unfolding, to its empowerment, to its capacities for love, expression, and comprehension, to the longing for connection with the cosmos.” (Energy Medicine, 1998)
We can then see that these energy centers help to integrate all the aspects of our Being – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Understanding them and caring for them increases your overall well being. Learning more about them, you can learn more about yourself. You then can become a wholer, more joyful person.
